Speedometer Removal
Help ! I Need to remove a defunct sppedometer. I figured the trunk, and removed the cardboard cover near the bulkhead to find clutters of heater stuff. Going under the dash is more of the same. Can't get these chubby little fingers anywhere near. Can someone help me with this project. Am I missing something or is Porsche determined to make my holiday a misery ? Reading the forum indicates the newer models pry off from the dash but older ones have the typical retainer bracket with 2 screws in the back. I assume it must be removed from the trunk but don't see this happening without removal of the heater stuff. Any help will be appreciated.

Hey David
First, I have a 68, so maybe its not the same. The trunk is right, NOT under the dash in the car. The speedo cable should be visible in the trunk. Follow that, maybe that will help. Maybe your looking to hard. Also, two screws in the back. Brett |

68` models dont have a blower moter assemble and 69`models do have one making it harder but is not that bad. Be careful not to knock off any other wires or bulb connections while in there. Speedo swap in a 69` should take no more than 15 minutes. Its about 2 minutes in a 68`.

SPEEDOMETER (part 2)
Thanks to Brett & PJV911 for the advice. Blower removal is necessary to remove gagues on my '69. It looks intimidating but is really simple. Remove large hoses on each side of the blower & small one at the bottom that goes through the bulkhead. The blower is held in place by 2 screws that are behind the grille at the top of the hood. Remove grille & screws and the blower can be moved away.
Speedometer shows signs of repair (PO's name scribbled on the back). Cable does not rotate while car is in motion, but I can't extract it. Guess its time to crawl underneath... Maybe I'll get away with a new cable. Any further Hints ?? Thanks for your help! David |

David:
My 69 speedo did not work either. It was the speedometer drive attached to the tranny, not the cable or speedo. You can buy one at Performance Products for $69.00. Be sure if you buy one elsewhere that the drive gear ratio is 1:1 not 2:1. The gear ratio is stamped on the end of the VDO speedometer drive unit. Mine was just worn out, everything else was OK. They are easy to replace let me know if you need details. Good Luck RonD 69 912 Targa

IIRC the odometer reset cable stays with the gauge - you remove the end of the cable from where it mounts to the dash panel and feed it up and out with the gauge.

To clarify, remove the small knob you turn to reset the trip odometer (There is a very small screw inside the knob) then unscrew the nut (Has two small notches) and then it will pull through the dash and out.
