912 battery

I need to replace a 1968 912 battery. Suppliers specify a 51R but it's too tall
The box measures approximately 12 inches long by 7 inches wide and 7 inches tall.
Does anyone know an appropriate battery size?

Check out the Miata batteries (Group U1 ?) which are smaller at the cost of lower CCA.
That said, I’ve used 51R in my 68 without issues. It fits in the tray, allows non-stressed cable hookups and fits under the top cover.
