Aluminum or Magnesium?

I have a 1969 912. My son wants to rebuild the engine and tranny but the transmission gasket set has two options, aluminum or magnesium. How do I tell which one we have? Any feedback is much Appreciated!

Can you post some pictures? If it’s a 69 trans it’s probably magnesium. Look for a casting number on the case - 901.301.101.2R should be mag. Also, magnesium will have a grayish look while alum will be more a silver look.

Compare the color of your transmission to the engine. If they look the same it’s aluminum. If it looks much darker it’s mag

I can’t take pictures at the moment because the tranny is under the car and the car is surrounded by stuff. I really appreciate the quick reply to my question. I will put the info to good use.

Clean-off a dime-size area on the trans down to clean metal. Dribble vinegar on it with a q-tip. If it fizzles and froths it is magnesium.
