912 serial and engine number confusion

So the motor number is 1284866. The vin is 12804702 and also. Engine shroud mount number 616.101.217 OR. Please help me to understand the dilemma. The registration states 1968. Mechanic reciepts state 1800cc engine. Any advice thanks!

Engine is a 616/39 which is MY 68, US spec.
Vin is MY 1968 Karmann built coupe. The 616.xxx.xxx. number is a part number for a generator stand using the later, large generator (appropriate for 68.) All of these numbers point to a 1968 Karmann coupe built for export to North America. 1800cc most likely a big bore kit.
