Cost to get Barn Find Running and Driveable

Hi All

Hoping to add a 912 to my garage. Now Looking at a 69 912 that has not been driven for a while and in a garage. Plates are 5 years expired so it’s been off the road for at least that long. Asking the Brain Trust’s opinion the cost to send to a Porsche specialist shop to get it going. There are no records but the seller says it’s an older 20 year or so restoration. From my experience, it will need: (Estimates are for parts and labor)

> Fuel tank drained and cleaned - $500
> Fuel pump replaced - $200 (possible ruptured diaphragm)
> Carbs rebuilt - $900
> Oil and trans fluid changed - $250
> Full tune up - plugs, points, adjustments - $350
> Adjust valves - $300
> Air and fuel filters - $100
> New battery - $200
> 4 Tires - $600
> Brakes - Replace master cylinder, rebuild or replace calipers and replace rubber hoses - $1000
> Misc Electrical, - $500

Am I forgetting anything? Looks like around 5k. Thoughts if my estimates are too high or low? Been a while since I paid to have work done.

Thanks.

I think you're pretty much on track. You might be able to tackle some of these items yourself like the filters to save few bucks

Also pull the plugs and spray lots of pb blaster or similar into each cyl before attempting to hand turn the motor. I’ve seen some true Porsche experts go through a systematic & lengthly process prior to turning anything. This included filling (until overflowing) the engine and transaxle with a super thin mixture of cheap motor oil and some kerosine and letting things sit for a week.

if you want a better idea as to how much it will cost you go out and get three different estimates.
then add them up.

Maybe your in the ballpark on costs. Now double it for the unforeseen. The unforeseen might not happen but just be mentally prepared.
If it where me I'd take it to John Benton (Benton Performance) in LA for a PPI. A lot of these cars rust from the inside out and the underside up. The suspension, body, interior, and engine compartment look great. They are lipstick on a pig. I've poked into a bunch of the long hoods. After a couple hours the folks wish they had never seen the car. RUST! You got to look behind the headlights, front and rear turn signals, heater tubes, rockers, preferably the torsion tube, the front pan between the front suspension pickup points. The front pan is two parts and when they are installed there is a hollow tube pickup point to pickup point in the front suspension. Lift up the carpets, and look at the pan, etc., etc. Of the 25 to 30 of these cars I inspected, my car and only one other were rust free in that area. The suspension pickup points looked great tell I poked at them with a pick. Yuck. When I brought my car home, I had a metal man cut a one inch square hole next to my passenger side front pickup point. I then ran a camera probe all the way across to the drivers side. No rust. I ran that probe everyplace I could think of. We then por15'ed the hollow area , then waxed it.
Before you spend a dime take it to Benton. Please! I have no skin in the game. I just want you to get a good car.
This looks like it could be a good one. These days based on what was done, I think it's a fare price. I have 2.5 times that in mine. And Haggerty's is covering it for that. A really good long hood is not a 25 to 50K car anymore. High 5's at least.
