New owner ‘67 912-6

Hi. Long time BMW owner and finally pulled the trigger on a sweet 912-6 deal here locally. It came with a 2.2T engine with zenith carbs. I’m currently replacing floor pans and some other spots of concern but overall it’s in great shape. Planning on keeping the paint as is for now since this will be a light rally build. Is there a good step by step write up in this forum somewhere to swap the flat 6 in? I’ve swapped engines before so I know the basics. Thanks!

I have done this 2.2T swap twice with good results. I don't know of a 'step by step' to guide you through the process. A couple of things off the top of my head .... (1) If the trans is from 1970, check to see if the flanges will match up with your half-shafts.. and the 70 trans and engine likely has the 'push' type clutch mechanism. You may need to source an earlier 901 trans and flywheel that is correct for the early cars pull-type clutch setup used with earlier transmissions. Not a big deal, that stuff is available. You can get a new flywheel from AA Performance, etc. (2) you will need to install rear corner mounts on the frame to hang the engine properly. Those corner mount pieces are still available new from Porsche and can be welded in place. You can leave the original 912 engine mounts in place, they do not really get in the way of doing stuff, or you can grind them off if you plan on never going back to a 912 engine. On the 68 I currently own I left them in place. (3) You will probably want to source some 911 gauges so you can see oil pressure, temp, oil level, etc. The original 912 wiring harness is same for the 911 so the extra wires from the engine compartment to the front dash area are usually taped-back, but are there. (4) you need to install a 911 oil tank/filter console in the right rear fender area. (the 911 is a dry sump system, so you need that stuff (5) you may need the 911 transmission mount if your body has the softer 912 mount with the big rubber vibration isolator blocks. (5) You can use the 912 tachometer if you get one of the TACH-ADAPT units (here comes my plug) that our host sells, and you will need to install a CDI ignition unit, etc. unless you go with some other type of ignition system.

The 2.2T engine is ok in stock form, has nice torque a broad powerband to about 5500 rpm, but then starts starving. There are ways to boost that performance a bit with the Zenith carbs.... larger venturis (30 or 32 versus 27 stock) and larger jetting.

A fun project!
