Question 69 Targa Front Seal

I replaced the front Targa rubber seal that goes around the windshield last year. And the Targa top does no longer fits flush with the top edge of the windshield frame.

The old and new rubber seals were very different. The old was a single wide lip facing the rear of the car. The new one is "Y" shapped and one lip faces front the other back.

Which type of seal do you have on your 69 Targa? Can you post a picture of it?? Could be I have the wrong one or type installed.

I get lots of air passing under the front edge of the top when it is on the car. I would expect lots of water too if I drove in the rain.

I know it is clamped down as tight as I can make it.

Thanks for your help!

Ron D

Hi Ron

There is an early seal ('67-'69) #901.565.099.40 and 2 later seals ('70-'85) #911.565.090.47 & ('86-'89) #911.799.565.80

Also, the change for the '70 model year was used on some of the '69s. The Targa top was improved at this time. You may have either the 69 or the 70 style.

I have 2 tops from '69s. The one that came with my car fits. The spare top I bought is the newer style and therefore has gaps.

Sorry I can't supply a picture or more info right now.

This is a known problem .

It sems althought he part number has remained the same, the physical dimensions of the front seal are different ont he new ones.

Dan Pechtel (Cars Inc - The Targa Guru http://www.carsinc-nj.com/index.html) has published information on getting the new rubber to fit in our older cars.

See the info here:
