The dashboard on my '66 912 is cracked and in pretty bad shape. Is it a difficult process to replace these things? I am just speaking about the top part.

I've seen lots-o-info on this subject in the PorscheFans 911 digest. A simple e-mail to the list should elicit a useful crop of replies. Haven't we seen something on this in Pelican Tech? Maybe just my confused state!! Apparently it depends on whether you're going to put an After-market 'dashcover' on, or actually replace the original. My recollection on the more complex original dash replacement was that it was a 'windscreen out' job. Good luck!!

No, we don't have a tech article on this one yet, but it is something that I have done before. Frankly, the hard part is getting the new dashtop. I assume that's what you want to swap out. Good used ones are almost non-existant. The good news is that I believe that the top is held on with nylon nuts which makes their removal a lot easier. You may want to solicit the help of someone who has long, thin, skinny arms to reach some of the more difficult nuts...

On my '66, I was able to remove the dash without removing the windshield. As I remember there are seven bolts holding the dash down, five in the trunk and two underdash. I had to used a rustbreaker on the bolts so the threads would not strip. The '66 dash has metal support frame, covered with foam and leatherette. A metal strip runs the length of the dash at the middle seam to secure the two pieces of leatherette. I stripped the worn/torn materials off, and took the dash to an upholstery shop for recovering, then reinstalled it. The most difficult features to reproduce accurately are the orignal sharp edges on the brow above the instruments, and the perforations for the speaker.
