How hot is normal?

What is the normal oil temperature for the 912 engine. My temp gauge is broke, so I installed a temporary VDO oil temp gauge (with matched sender).

Driving around town in mid 80's temperature, The oil runs at ~190°F (88°C) around town and goes to ~230°C (110°C) on the highway.

Are these temps normal? What temp is the "red zone" on the factory temp gauge.

Thanks much,
Chris

Oil temperature should be dependent on several factors including how well you oil cooler is performing (getting obstructed?), etc.; I have a 911 dual temperature/ pressure gauge in my '68, and under the conditions you described and at 1000' ASL, mine runs about 10-15 degrees F lower. In my opinion I like an engine running cooler than you describe.
