How hot is normal?
What is the normal oil temperature for the 912 engine. My temp gauge is broke, so I installed a temporary VDO oil temp gauge (with matched sender).
Driving around town in mid 80's temperature, The oil runs at ~190°F (88°C) around town and goes to ~230°C (110°C) on the highway. Are these temps normal? What temp is the "red zone" on the factory temp gauge. Thanks much, Chris |

Oil temperature should be dependent on several factors including how well you oil cooler is performing (getting obstructed?), etc.; I have a 911 dual temperature/ pressure gauge in my '68, and under the conditions you described and at 1000' ASL, mine runs about 10-15 degrees F lower. In my opinion I like an engine running cooler than you describe.
