throttle linkage bushings
My accelerator bushings are history. Can I
rebuild just these bushings or do I have to rebuild all bushings in the pedal cluster? How complex is this job? Thanks |

Dave:
I suggest rebuilding the entire pedal cluster. Bronze bushing pedal cluster upgrade kits are available to replace the original plastic parts. The idea is that the bronze material is less subject to deterioration. The accelerator pedal has a piece of spring steel that eventually will wear out. Once that happens, even if the rubber holds the pedal together, the pedal will not want to return to the correct position. Condition of the existing pedal can be checked with the linkage disconnected. As far as complexity, it's not bad; but you can always figure on spending more time than planned, especially when you find rusted bolts, or you decide you want to spray paint something, etc. Once the pedals are reconditioned, your car should be even more fun to drive! The pedal clusters typically don't get lubricated and after twenty years or more and the first master cylinder leak, you get swollen bushings and cooroded shafts. Being the low point on the floor, it is a filthy mess and some scraping and probing is needed just to find the bolts. Take the time to do the job right. Take it all apart. Power brush the shafts. Put in the new bronse bushings. Any coorosion on the return springs, replace them. Put it all back together. Lub once a year with LubroMoly spray grease and enjoy the benefits of the no compromise solution.

Don't forget the bushings on the left side of the transmission, where the throttle linkage pivots. These too are available in metal.
