Lowering rear of 912

I have a 68 912, its a swb, with the stock 5' wheels on it. I've lowered the front, and am interested to know how I can lower the rear (with the stock non-adjustable spring plates). Also, can I fit 7 inch wheels in the rear without doing anything to the bodywork? I was offered a free set of 6 and seven inch wheels for the car, and if the 7s won't fit, I'll just put the 6s in the rear and get rid of the 7s.

To lower the rear, you'll have to remove the spring plates from the torsion bars and rotate them in relation to each other-I think Pelican's tech page has the procedure to get it right (or at least real close) the first time. 7" inch rims should fit fine in the rear-they'll come right to the edge of teh wheel well with factory backspacing. Be careful of the inside sidewall of the tires-they'll be pretty close to the trailing arm/spring plate attaching bolts, and you may need wheel spacers.

Howdy, lowering the rear end is a chore at best. As stated in the other post, you will have to remove the tortion spring covers. That's the easy part. You need to carefully mark your starting position and then begin disassembly. There is so much that can go wrong, but it can be corrected. You should go straight to the alignment shop when done.
As far as 7" wheels are concerned, I would trade them for some nice 6" wheels. I have raced and street driven with sticky 205 60 and 50 series tires. I have tried 7" and it is just too close. Good luck, JMB....
