Valve stems
On a 68 with Fuch's that I'm restoring, found an interesting surprise. The car came with new Pirelli P6's. I went to inflate a deflated spare and thought it had a faulty valve. Turns out it had a tube in it ( wrong size, marked "Not for radials"). Anyway, turns out all of the tires have tubes in them. I know there is a debate over bead seating in the older Fuchs, but I cant find the proper clamp-in valves that will fit the rims. Does anyone have a source or is it going to be an issue going tubeless?

Remove the tubes. There are options for valve stems. TR415 is the rubber valve stem you want. If you want a metal stem you might try a motorcycle shop. What size are the wheels? What is the part # on the back?

They're 15 inch. I didn't see a part number so either the inch of dirt is covering it or their Faux-Fuchs. The TR415 valves don't work, as the length and angle of the stem hole is too long for the outer lip of the stem to lock in. That's why I was considering a clamp-in type, or if there was a correct fitting stem for these.

Strange... The TR415 is the rubber stem of choice for early wheels. I have never heard of a problem.
Check This Thread You might check with Al Reed or the local motorcycle shop. There has been some confusion about wheels with or without the safety bead. The bead is there to keep the tire from moving inward in the case of rapid deflation. Tubeless tires can be run on either wheel. Of course, as we're discussing, the early wheels which originally had tubes will need a valve stem that fills the larger hole. |
