my temp. gauge needle pegs to the right as soon as the ignition is on...before i replace gauge or temp. sender, has anyone seen this before? it looked as though the polarity was reversed, i switched the wires, and got the same result. could be a short, but where to begin? thanks...

Have you checked ALL the wires. It sounds as if the wire got disconnected from the oil pressure sending unit on the engine, right behind the distributor. Otherwise I would check the wires to see if they're good. If they are good it sounds like the guage is the problem, or possibly the oil pressure sending unit. How to check them is beyond me, so I would contact Harry Pellow at www.hcpresearch.com if thats the case. Good luck!

Looking from the back of the gauge the BLUE/WHITE wire should be on the left (+) and the GREEN/BLACK wire should be on the right. To check the gauge/sender the engine should be cold and the ignition on. Disconnect the cable from the sender and earth it on the engine block. The gauge should now return to low temp position, if it does the sender is faulty. If the gauge remains in the high temp position it is the gauge or wiring to gauge that is at fault. the wires were set up correctly on the gauge, grounded temp sender on the engine block and got the same result...i will look for a short or look for a replacement gauge...thanks for the help

Check the wires first! I had a 914 with the same problem and found that it was grounded due to the old wiring cover got too much heat making it brittle and cracked where it could not be easily seen. I followed the wire and noticed that it was touching metal.
