WTB 912E THERMAL REACTORS

IN NEED OF THERMAL REACTORS FOR MY 912E BUY OR LEASE FOR SMOG. BUILDING 2.7 AND NEED TO BUY TIME. PLEASE HELP

Are you sure you need them? I passed Calif. Smog II without them. When they do their physical inspection and the "smog god" asks about the thermal reactors, just point to the heat exchangers, near the downpipes. Few living people even know what these parts look like. Just make sure EGR is functioning PERFECTLY.

Bill hit it on the spot. I know NO ONE who uses their thermal reactor. The smog mechanics know nothing about these cars so make something up. When my 68 912 with the dreaded smog equipment still had to be smoged I used an old Kerby vacum cleaner motor for the smog pump and the hose from the vacum for smog tubes going to the air cleaners. The guy thought it was the original smog equipment and the car passed, the day after he failed it for not having the original smog equipment! Did it work, no, did I ever use it, no, are the smog guys dumb, YES!

You want proof of the Smog equipment made by Kerby , I can post a picture of the air cleaners with a hole cut for the Kerby smog equiptment.

About thermal reactors: The general opinion is not to use them, but what is out there to replace them with? I'm assuming some sort of header system. Are there after market headers available? I just purchsed a 912E, and would like to replace the reactors strictly because they seem to be extremely restrictive. Thanks for any advise.

I'd suggest roaming around junkyards and looking at any 914 2.0 or earlier cars. I think they had the pipes going directly into the exchangers. Also check out some VW vans (late aircooled type4/s). I think they all take the same gasket, so something out there has to work. Either way, don't modify your originals - the way things are going here in Calif. they'll be worth more than the 912E itself!! Good luck, Bill.

P.S.Josh912: I thought I had approached the edge with the smog guys - absolutely great trick you pulled! (Maybe you could re-define that device and sell your car as a rare 1968 Porsche 912Turbo (Euro market only), or even more appropriately the even rarer 912K (K for kompressor or Kirby)!!
