912 speedo
My buddy has just finished building up a beautiful 356, and is now starting on a early 70's 912. I noticed that the tachometer redlines at 6k. I thought that this was a little high for the 356 style motor, but he believes that it is a stock item.
Is the tach a leftover, since the car is a 4-cyl 911? or is it a PO mod? does it belong there? Can the 356 style motor turn 6k unmodifed? The gauge in question is the black face VDO w/ white numbers, much similar to those found in early 914's, with the silver hub in the center, and 6k redline (914 redline @ 5500). Thanks for clearing this up. Kokanee '64 Manx 914 2.0L |

the first 912 was 66-69 and had the 356 super engine with some case modifications for mounting and red lind @ about 6100 rpm and guages with double crome rings and green numbers!
The 912E of 76' had a 2L 914 engine with L-jet fuel injection and about a 5600 rpm red line and black vdo guages. |

thank you
there are no green numbers, black VDO w/ white numbers like a 914 or 911, w/ red mark at 6K. I know what a 356 tach looks like, is that what you mean by double chrome rings/ green numbers? but that's interesting to know it had the 356 super motor in it were no 912's made from 70-75? I was aware of the motor switch to 914 2.0 in '76 912E. K- |

Unfortunatly 912's were expensive to build as they were a 911 with a 356 engine and did not have the profit margin of the 911's. The 914 replaced the 912 in 70' in the states and due to many reasons was droped with the 912e being produced for just one year in 76' to bridge the gap to the relese of the 924!

the instrument is original from a porsche 912. (1968 or 1969 modell). the series from 1965 to 1967 were equipped with the 356 style gauges (black with green). the 68-69 ones are similar to the porsche 911 instruments. the redline at 6000 rpm is correct. the motor is nearly the same to the last series 356 (the 356 sc) with 90 hp.
