When I start my 1966 912, I get a huge backfire that sounds like a stick of dynamite. Seems to happen when the car is cold and air temperature is cool. I have rebuilt my Solexes and have MDS ignition. I also changed the exhaust manifold gasket thinking it might allow air in to ignite unburned fuel. Nothing has worked. Anyone have a suggestion?

The backfire may be caused by one of the following: Lean mixture.
Leaky or sticking intake valve or a weak or broken intake valve spring. Bad distributor cap. Intermittent short circuit in primary or a short circuit in the coil or in secondary wire from coil to distributor. (Any of these will cause a loud muffler explosion.) Hope this is of some help to you. Good luck, Duke-69/912. |

I had the same problem when I temporarily had a electric fuel pump with too much fuel pressure.
