Early 912 Generator Question

Hi All!

I have a serious problem with my 65´912....

The generator is not charging the battery anymore....

The battery itself ist OK....(just charging in the moment)...

I disassembled the Generator.

The Identification Stamp says:

>0101 206 116< >EG 14V 38A32

And there is a additional Sticker that says "Remanufactured by Bosch" with the numbers: >GR 26 x< >0101 206 113 49<.....

I checked the brushes they are OK....?!

So how can I measure, or however check if this Generator is the bad boy or maybe the external controller (that I already replaced last year)......

I am very happy to receive any advice/guess....

Thanks in advance &

Vielen Dank from Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Greetings, I had the same problem reently on a friends 66 912. Everything looked fine, but I could not get it to charge.
After a great deal of searching I found that one of the windings was not making good contact on the pulley side of the generator.
I had to tap on the rivet that held it in place with a hammer and chisel.
I know that it is hard to visualize, but that is what I did.
In any case, the external regulator is cheap and should be the first try. If that does not solve the problem, you know that it is the generator.
If you have another vehicle to drive you can send your generator to a repair shop instead of buying one.
I keep a spare generator and regulator on hand because it is difficult to find out exactly what is wrong when the charging system fails. It is much easier to swap them out. Good Luck!!! JMB

Thumbs up

@ Mein12 ...

Thanks for your quick answer

Tobay I reassembled the Generator (after cleaning the fan all night long) and the freshly charged Varta Battery (slim size 45AH) ...

Certainly everything started up smoothly but what else - without charging.....

OK now I will replace the regulator and afterwards the generator but there is a funny aspect....

When I use the Varta (45AH) Battery everything is working except the turn signals, the temperature display, the fuel display, the tachometer.....funny enough....

When I now replace the Varta Battery with my nice an Red Jump-Box - all the above mentioned problems disappear - except the charging problem.....

I also today replaced all ground wires/connectíons with new ones and cleaned the contact surfaces down to the very bare metal.....

I am somehow confused.....

Any Guess?

Thanks and viele Grüsse

I had similar problems (now known as issues)
during the spring. By any chance did you neglect to polarize the gen.. after reinstalling it or the regulator? Apply voltage to the D+ with field grounded for a second or two. This made all the difference for me.Good luck with the other "issues".

Sam1, I am in the Los Angeles area and can help you find parts. Can you attend the Porsche swap meet on the 15th? I think you would really like it. Later, JMB. Mein12@mediaone.net

sorry for the others which don´t understand german. but it is nice to meet one from the same city, with the same interest in 912.

MfG
