Post need help guys! 912E wont pass cali smog...

i know this has been addressed in the pass, but i had a few additional questions...i'm in the process of smogging my 912E, and took a pretest...i failed CO...as a gross polluter!

MAX MEAS
15mph 1.41 4.12
25mph 1.21 3.85

what now? can you guys recommend anyone who is familiar with passing 912E's? that may know EXACTLY what to do...i know a major part of it is a guessing game...but someone has to be familiar with this enough to get right to the point and adress EVERYTHING! i passed everything else, by a good margin...i had a diagnostic done that didnt help much..pretty much a waste of money, the non p-wrench says i need a new Air Flow meter, but im not too sure about that...what do you guys think?!

HELP!!!

PDV: You might try testing/replacing the temp sender. Unfortunately, what someone told you just might be true. If your ignition system is dead-on, etc., you might be faced with a new AF meter. This thing pretty much has control over mixture at all running conditions. You'll also need to have the CO adjusted on an analyzer - rules of thumb for carb adjustment do little good with this FI setup. If the black plastic cap on the meter looks like it has been removed, then the "wiper arm" has probably been tampered with - re-adjustment is possible but you need to have an analyzer & know to what specs you're adjusting. Are you in CA? Did you have to go to "Smog Only?"

thanks steve, i saw that post earlier. i'll try all of those, but was wondering if who those guys went to that might have helped also...

Mr. bowen, thanks for the info, i'll try that...where can i get a new AF meter if i need one? is there a VW or Bosch part # i can look up...somehow just saying porsche to my local parts guy seems to make a money chime for him...i wanted to do my own work, but without a CO tester i didnt know where to start...can you recommend a shop? this guy isnt a p-wrench, i'd feel alot better taking it to someone familiar with smogging 912e's

oh, also, i am in cali...and they're making me go to smog only (so far 've only pre-tested)

thanks again...

The part number for the airflow meter (Intake Air Sensor) is Bosch 923 606 111 00. This meter matches up to the control unit (brain) 923 618 101 00. Any VW/dunebuggy shop who is an authorized Bosch dealer can look up this part. I got mine at GPR parts in SanLuis, but I think others would be able to get them. Also, just about any VW shop with an analyzer can do the initial adjustment. Usually, their instruments measure CO/HC but not NOx; but if your CO and HC reading are up to specs, then the NOx usually passes (assuming your EGR system is operating perfectly.) Also, if it looks like you're ready to test, be sure to check your gas cap - they love to fail cars because the cap can't hold pressure. Finally, you have the right to request a cooling fan for the test - tell them you want it. What part of CA are you in?

You might want to check for vacuum leaks. Our 912e has leaks on the intake runners at the cylinder heads and the bottom of the throttle body. The car runs and drives great but it is set to run very rich so it will not pass smog.
Our car ir due for a smog check in Feb.2002 I do not think it will pass but here in Canada they can only make you spend $350 for the smog repair if the repair is more then this you can fail the test and they give you a conditional pass for one year. What you do is fail the test then take the car to a mechanic get him to tune up the car and sign the form that the total repair is over $350 then go back and retest even if you fail you still can drive the car for 1 more year. The total cost is around $150. I would like our car to pass the test but it will probably take 2 or 3 years to fix everything properly.

Thumbs up

Yes, I agree with Steve. Hammer is the man you need to see. He can adjust your air flow meter. Just make sure your filter and smog tubes are clean. Contact Hammer at
