hard starting 912

I have a 912 engine that has been sitting for a couple of years. Car starts up but runs rough with a lot of backfiring. It has the big bore pistons with a 009 disty and weber 44's. timing checks out, valves too. can't get the engine too idle smoothly, any suggestions?

check plugs, points gap, plug wires, cap, rotor. check to see if you have a miss fire or not. balance carbs, clean all the jets to make sure no debris are blocking air flow. (make sure air, gas, and fire are good).

if not that.. do a compression AND leak down. could have bad news, or could have a loose head. if its good ckeck your dizzy (009 is the sign of the devil on these cars btw... will run, but will give no performance). a bad dizzy/timing and bad carbs often mimic each other in terms of signs and how the car acts.

motors been sitting a while.. how long is a while? long enough for rings, seals and things to go bad?
