The 2.0 loves to drop valve seats especially in warm climates. Next, carefully inspect the items that are unique to this model (costly to find and replace). The items are:

Heat exchangers
Muffler
Smog pump/compressor drive pulley assy

I few of the other "E" owners will add to the list (Thomas, Bill, Eki, Dave, Jake, etc...)

Good Luck,

Bob

Bob , you got it all covered. As usual.

Most of the parts are from 911 , and are not that hard to find , or expensive....

L-Jetronic ? If it works , it is a damn good unit.If it is playing up , it can be a nightmare to get sorted out.Especially if somebody who does not understand it has been playing with it!

Rust ! Alway important... most of the 912Ees are in good shape.I have seen some rotten ones too. I am not sure if they are all galvanised or not.

Heat exchangers , RARE ! And $$$ ! Muffler $$$ , exept if you go for BURSCH.Works out well with BURSCH , only 250$.

Inspect it properly!!! If worried , or suspicious , leave it.

Eki is correct. If the car has to be smogged, it better be complete. Thermal reactors are not that big of a deal in Ca anymore. There are so few of these cars left, chances are the smog tech has never seen one and doesn't know they are supposed to be there.

For the EFI, make sure the rubber intake boot between the AFM and throttle is not cracked. Nearly impossible to get a replacement. Dropped valve seats and cracked heads are very common if the EGR circuit has been damaged or removed. When working properly, the 2.0's easily pull 200k miles without a rebuild. I am working on one right now that is having EFI trouble. It has 218k on the engine and it has never been apart! Comp test shows 145-150 psi on all 4 cylinders. My buddy is the second owner and no, he won't sell it to me Since I can't find one I like, I am making my own. The EFI is almost complete and about to be installed.
