I've been around Porsches since the mid sixties (!) & have heard these rumors since the first Targas arrived. With the exception of a few backyard coupe to cabrio conversions, I have never seen anything like a factory produced car. The prototype below is rumored to have had a removable-top styling exercise version. I've seen this same picture is some books captioned as an "early 911" which might be the basis for some of these rumors. Other board members (especially those in Europe/GB) might have additional info - maybe one of the numerous coachbuilders did a show car.
Bill.

Around the mid 90's there was a company that offered kits to convert Targas to cabriolets - they used to run display ads in Hemmings (& offered similar kits to convert E-Type coupes to roadsters and MB 220/50/80SE coupes.) Also, there was a small shop here in Ventura that specialized in such conversions. Over the years, I've seen several of these converted Porsches (all early LWB cars) at least one had been a coupe. Like any "kits" the quality of work depends on the owner - one was beautifully finished while others were "works in progress."
