so were those carbs right?

atlporsche 07-05-2004 03:25 PM

yes the starter can be installed with the engine tin in place.

as for the carbs?? no idea...I've got a '67. it had solexes...not sure what was standard on '69...webers are a common upgrade.

sjd,
thanks for all the advice, any ideas on where to find seats or anything interior related? i need new gauges, new dash, new shifter, basically everything. thanks again, sean

atlporsche 07-05-2004 03:39 PM

pelican has lots of new replacement items...even the BBS for sale section. check the 912 registry site too...there's a for sale section there.

parts obsolete and parts heaven come to mind (ducking, for talking about competitors)

drexel912 07-05-2004 04:01 PM

i cant find the BBS for sale section... whats the link?

atlporsche 07-05-2004 04:05 PM

yeah...it's a nightmare to get to...it's not really part of the bbs...it's part of the registry...

912registry.org then click on forsale section.

sean,

starter isnt hard but you should get a second hand to help you out. the top right bolt has an alan socket head (i wana say 10 or 12 mm maybe?)
anyways the nut for this bolt is behind the engine and you will need someone to hold the nut while you unbolt it. thats the hardest part about doing the starter, that one friggin nut thats harder than hell to reach.

i played catcher for an adult amature/semipro team for a while, my knees would get stiff but never blew em out.. my shoulder.. thats another story. torn rotator cuff killed my chances of really being able to enjoy playing the game again when i was 21. so in the last two years ive really focused more of my engery on my second love.. mein 912. (i turn 24 in december)

ok.. anyways back to cars.. seats from a 70's/80's 911 or 944 will bolt right in. you know how those seats are, being a previous 944 owner. thats one option. another option is you could fit some bmw recaros in..

places to look ebay, parts heaven etc..

new shifter? dont go with a weltmeister short shift kit.. bad for synchros and its really shortso youll have to bend over to shift.

your bogguing down prob.. either carbs or distributor.

what kinda distributor do you have? its either gonna be an 031, 022, 061, 050 or a 009. if its an 009, take it out and use it as a paperweight. if its any of the others youre ok. the 050 is close but not wuite right and are a ***** to time properly.. you want either an 031 022 or 061 idealy. if you dont mind spending 200 you can get a new dizy that just came out that is supposed to be amazing for our cars called an rsr0012.

take it to a shop and have it properly tuned. (and have em show you what to do!)

you should go to the auburn meet on jul;y 25th in auburn indiana, its our 1st rustbelt region meet. then there is a show on july 31 in columbus with the central ohioo tub club (weve been asked to be guests). it would behove you to come check out the other 912s and 356s to get a feel on what you have what others have how to do what, tips, tricks, and just plain talking shop. (yes.. they all sound like that ;)) http://www.dasvroom.com

you really only have two options with mufflers. bursch and stock. bursch will be loud as all hell (but you know this) and it will give a few hp. stock are pretty damn quiet and dont give hp.. so depends whats more important to you.

Harry,

Thanks for all the info and invites. Sorry to hear about your arm, I tore my ACL and MCL along with all three miniscuses on my right knee, so I feel your pain.

Could the bogging and backfiring be due to the hole in the exhaust? There is an aftermarket two pipe exhaust on there now which gives it more hp, everyone I call in the area suggests to have one custom made if I want to keep it that way.

How long does it take to change the stater? The part is apparently a hundred bucks new... should I go new or get a used one?

Thanks again,
Sean

Sean,

Before you buy a new starter - make sure that's really the problem! Often the connector on the solonoid attached to the starter for the yellow lead (from the ignition switch) goes, and replacing that can get you starting again. With the car up on ramps, look at the starter - when you're looking up at at, to the left is the solonoid (with the wires attaching to it). Pull the wires off (you need a 13mm wrench for the bigger ones). Clean everything really well with some emery paper and some spray contact cleaner (to wash off the grit from the emery paper after you use it - VERY important or it melts into nicely insulating glass...). Replace the connectors if they're shot. Put everything back together and give it a shot.

Is it turning over at all when you turn the key, or just a click and nothing?

You can replace the starter with the engine in, it's just a pain to do...

Good luck - and keep us posted!

Jason

the bogging wouldnt be from a hole.. kts just gonna sound like crap when you have an exhuast leak, its not really going to loose power.

now if you have a loose head.. that would sound like a realy realy bad exhaust leak in a way and you would loose alot of power

jason,

how was your trip!?

jpamental 07-06-2004 10:51 AM

Harry - it was amazing! I posted a little bit about it on 912bbs on the thread you started with the pics from Sunday morning. Fantastic drive; no real problems with the car (although I've developed an advanced Hot Start problem that I'm trying to solve today - even when it's cold now the ignition switch doesn't work. The engine bay start does though, so I'm ok for the moment.)

Great to meet you!

Jason

drexel912 07-06-2004 12:46 PM

this is great... i love porsches!!!!

anyway, turns out it wasnt a starter or an alternator or a battery problem.... it was a dumbass problem. turns out, the previous owner was a dumbass. when he installed the aftermarket CD player he wired it wrong and it was feeding off the battery even when the car was off. I didnt know it because the face was shot and the display didn't work, even when the car was running and music was playing.

You guys should see some of the stuff this guy did that I have to undo. He wired two home speakers to the CD player, one sits on the back seat (just sits there) and the other is mounted to a piece of plywood he shoved under the dash on the passenger side. there are bungie cords holding on the door panels (anyone know where i can get new door panels?) and duct tape holding on the compartments to the door panels (i need new ones of those).

does anyone know where i can get new guages? i need them badly, the ones now are rusted and the clock doesnt even work. how hard is it to replace the guages? thanks again guys!!!

and where's my gratitude? LOL!!!

drexel912 07-06-2004 06:35 PM

YOURE AWESOME

(is that enough gratitude?)

Hoffman912 07-07-2004 12:11 AM

ok a few things

1) gauges.. partsheaven.com or or if you wanna play russian rullete, ebay.

2)what year? door pannels are different for different years and so are the pockets. also do you wanna be correct or do you wanna be close, or do you just not care as long as it looks decent? is money a factor? depending on what you want to do and how much i can give you the info on what and where. you could buy used original.. new original type (if available depending on year), light weight carrera rs replica.. etc..

3)dash.. it depends on what year.. certian years are not interchangeable and are different.

4)912s dont have alterators, they have generators.

5) ol' stevie d isnt awsome.. he kicks ass! ;) (and his porscha-ru aint too bad either!)

i see youre quickly learning that many po's sure know how to mess some stuff up! most of us are undoing what a po has done.. when your done it will be all the more rewarding. :)

btw.. some time we should meet up with our 912s and catch an indians game :)

If you're still looking for interior or any other parts for that matter there's a guy in NJ (sort of local for you) that has a lot of stuff at good prices. He has a lot of vintage Porsche parts and really knows his stuff. Give him a call with you needs and I'm sure he'll be glad to help. (I'm not affiliated with him, just a happy customer)

It's a '69 ... Price isnt really an option, it is but it isnt... ya know :) I am looking for something that fits... Seats don't really matter I guess since they all come with rails and it's just a matter of installing the rails. The gauges I don't mind having to install... as long as I have some guidance so I don't FUBAR anything. Any suggestions as to where to go (thank you for the ones so far) are great... I am shopping around and it seems Ebay is the only place that really has cheap stuff, but I dont know how good their carpet kits and door panels are.

Also, you know that strip that runs along the dash (mine is some mesh matterial) that runs underneath the ignition, light knob, cigarrette lighter, etc.... well I saw a 912 with a metal strip... so if you know where I can get that or if I have to custom make it I would appreciate that.

What have you guys done as far as stereos (now that I know I have to have mine redone). is there some way to wire speakers in the back or do I just go under the new carpet when I install it.

I am still looking for an exhaust so if anyone has suggestions on something that is quiet I appreciate it. Thanks guys, and yes... as soon as you want to meet for an Indians game I am all about it. I love the indians and have actually never been to the new stadium.

Sean

drexel912 07-07-2004 12:52 PM

OH.... i forgot about the dash board... mine has a few cracks, nothing major but it sets off my obsessiveness. Did you guys use dash caps or just pull it off and have it redone?

atlporsche 07-07-2004 03:28 PM

a dual cam flat four with open headers to supertrapps is my stereo.

sjd

Hoffman912 07-07-2004 04:04 PM

black basket weave dash is on a 69 car.. the brished alluminum is up til 68.

go with a stock exhaust its the quietest.

my sterio.. i put in an early 70s nos blaupunkt my dad had new in the box for a vw.. (looks dead stock and never used), wired a 6 disk cd changer through the trunk. very trick and stock looking. no one can tell its there.

you can buy a new dash pad for a 69 i believe.

call up will at classic and speed parts. i believe howard beard posted his info on the1st page of this post. he will have most parts youve asked about. if not.. he will tell ya where to get em.
