What to do about rust?
 

the suspension pan on my 912 was rusted out as ere parts of the surrounding fender areas. I cut out all the heavy rust and plan on replacing it with home made pieces. Is this an acceptable solution? thanks

the pieces are 16 gauge steel. pretty close to the factory metal.

Same gauge steel and hopefully the same properties? where did the steel come from? Looks to be acceptable. It mgiht require more corrosion protection since the replacement panels have an electri-coat primer that is easy to scuff and coat. Use weld through primer as well.

has any one had any experience with using a cold galvanizing compound instead of a weld through primer. I am just asking this because I can't find a local store that carries weld through primer. thanks.

Not on sheet metal but back in my youth I installed chain link fences and all of our welds were coated with cold galvanizing compound which still looks good after 30 years, oh in Michigan too.

I have made all kinds of little bits and the like. Weld through primer is a must. Grangers or McMaster Carr has it.

Cold galv is made with zinc. Zinc is very toxic when welded and also interferers with the weld.

I think you should be commended for your ingenuity, many would have bought replacement panels and alike, or hacked it up in some way. I understand Por 15 is a good sealer for problematic rusty areas. I used a commerial brushable seam sealer, get it at a (automotive paint store),and undercoated everything heavy. It's been two years and all is well, I live in Northen Ca. and drive in the rain...sometimes.
