Might Buy this 912e Any thoughts?

1976 PORSCHE 912E, Black, 4 cyl, 5 spd, completely rebuilt engine, transmission, clutch, new tires; interior and sunroof needs some work--will not pass CA smog . Orginal southern cali 912e, the seller was asking $7900 got it down to $6500. Engine rebuilt 2 years ago ( no proof) Transmission and gas tank repaired when current owner ran over some metal on the road, I asked if the undercarriage was damaged, he said no . The interior needs the most work on the car the mechanics on the car are solid (so he says)

The ac does not work and the sunroof needs new cables, also needs headliner. The car is in Southern Cali I plan to go up on Sunday to check it and it's good I plan on buying it.

2 things bug me the guy is attorney and the invoice for transmission work from A & R Motor sports from shows the odometer at 150, 929, he claims its a mistake?

Appears straight. Steam the motor and blow dry it. For the price of a seat reupholstery you can buy used vinyl seats.

A little TLC...6500 sounds fair if the mechanicals are good...

Question Coldblass since this car wont pass California Smog does the seller need to get a smog certiicate for me? I told him when I go up to Los Angels on Sunday and check it out, I will buying the car if its good , but since he took a loan out on the car he can not give me the pink slip. This is his solution, " Pink slip: I am having some trouble with this--if you were here on a Monday we could just complete the transaction at the bank, but I understand that that is not really going to work for you. I will be willing to give you a written release and transfer of ownership, as well as provide you with my identification. As I indicated, I'm an attorney licensed with the CA State Bar. My License No. is 215811, and you can verify this at the State Bar Website: http://www.calbar.ca.gov/state/calbar/calbar_home.jsp

I will also photocopy my driver's license and anything else you want. What I would like to do is go into my bank first thing Monday morning, get the pink slip and put it in the mail that morning for you. However, I understand that that arrangement might not be acceptable to you. Let me know. "

FYI,

The drive shaft and pulley that would normally run the A/C is missing all together.. These are fairly hard to find and will prevent you from ever getting the A/C working again. Food for thought if A/C is important to you.

Frank:
As you probably know, because of the recent CA smog laws, there are a good number of 76 Porsches (all types) that are now locked-in to smog tests, & this car was probably subject to the dreaded "test-only" type of test. You CAN buy a car in Calif. without having it smogged, but 2 key points are: 1. What will you need to register the car in Arizona (smog related.) and 2. Why did the car fail California smog? This second point is very important, as the 912E is not a really complicated smog system. It looks like it must have passed the visual inspection, as it appears to have all of the bells & buzzers. It could be the airflow meter, black box, etc. which can lead you down a trail of $$. Mike also makes a good point about the non-functioning A/C. This seems to be one of those cars that was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair, due to either lack of funds or appreciation of the car. I'd personally either walk on the deal or, if you really want it, make a REAL LOW offer on the car.... what are his options? He pretty much has to sell to an out of state buyer or a dismantler in Calif. As an attorney, he must know that in CA, the seller must provide a valid smog certificate, even if a bill of sale states that the buyer is purchasing the car with the knowledge that it won't pass CA smog.
IMO, if it drives well, offer 3500. I think there are better cars in the 6k range out there, especially smog-fail 912E's.
Good luck,
Bill.
p.s. At fitst glance I thought this was my old Black one, but I had no AC.

Thanks guys for the advice , hence why I like this board. I didnt even notice any of the missing ac parts. I gotta have AC since I am in Az, but that could wait till next summer to get fixed. I will make a lower offer to him, as my offer of $6500 seems to high for the items you have described and yes the smog will bite me in the ass here in phoenix area.

Coldbass,

How'd you do that? Running the A/C without the driveshaft or pulley... Sounds like magic?

Didnt mean to sound short in my initial reply.

Nah, just got PO'd when I was told that I was screwed after the second time my shaft broke. Then most said my simple alternate design wouldnt work....yah right.
Too much ego to let things die. My solution drives the a/c fine, then at smog time I change the belt to drive the air pump...

If you are curious, do a search on my name I recall posting pics, either here or at STF...several copied the solution as it looks more of a factory design than the stupid POS drive shaft assy...

Heh-heh....That was version 1. Version 2 will be more impressive both cosmetically and mechanically. V 2 has the Heat Exchangers, OEM muffler ceramic coated in the SS/aluminized look...there shall be a few more tricks to the internals and EFI

At the moment slow progress due Richs workload and my 911 madness. He is doing a complete rebuilds on 5 early 912 motors as well as my buddies 2.0 914. Daves 914 was just completed...whoa. Still emissions legal but a few of the tricks from my motor were incorporated on his.

Thoses little cars truly scoot and seem fun to drive. My issue is that I feel claustrophobic in them.

Damn it, go close the deal on the E so we can get you started on that pulley system and a working ac....
