I thought it would be fun to give the 912 list an update on the status of my hot-rodded 912E.

2.0 GA case and powder coated fan shroud

I've had my 912E for something like 7 years now. It's been an evolving project but, unfortunately, it's been running like garbage lately. Despite my best efforts, I can't figure out the problem even though I assembled the engine and drove the car across the country last fall! So, it's about to go in to see an engine doctor next week. Hopefully I'll be back autocrossing it in a few weeks.

Tell us more about the dist. did you have the Original recurved?

It's a 009 that my old mechanic custom-curved to increase the rate of advance. I keep it set at about 32-33 total degrees of advance.

The "E" sounds good even with your problems you are having

Cold any updates on your " head snapping" torque? What did Rich thinkof it?

....Well, after 13k miles on the set of tires, I am going shopping for a new set. Seems that hard "cornering" and "tire longevity" dont belong in the same sentence. Drivers rear tire is history. Its no longer safe. Going shopping this weekend. I have already looked at Goodyears, Michellins, Yoks, Bridgestones, Pirellis, etc.

I truly like the Sumitomo HTRZ 11. The tread pattern is sweet.
I am currently running 205/55/16s on Potenza RE730s

The Sumis are 205/50/16...slightly shorter profile ;) ;) ;)

This purchase is unexpected as I was hoping to get at least 15-20k miles from the Potenzas...Oh well, as we all know, if you are gonna play, then you're gonna have to pay (at some point).

I think that Dave is going to meet Rich in the next day or two....I want to have the new tires on in the event that I bump into Dave and he wants to take her for a spin...

Everyone loves those Falkens. It's the de facto tires in SCCA STS, which requires 200 treadwear number or higher. They are like an economy A032R that meets the STS rules. I have had a lot of friends who have tried these and loved them. Bad treadlife, but they're cheap. 15k would be a minor miracle. They are dicey in the rain after they start to wear, but it doesn't rain in SoCal. A little loud, too. But, all in all, can't be beat for performance/dollar spent.

Forgot to mention, I used to run 16 inch Fuchs with 205/55/16. I gotta tell you the car is much snappier with 15's. I was truly, truly surprised at how much slower the car felt on the 16's. Between the gearing disadvantage and the additional weight, it was a very noticeable difference.

I've even considered buying a set of the 14 inch Fuchs for autocross only just for those reasons (gearing advantage and weight). When you've got a small amount of grunt, you've gotta manage it as well as you can. For me, 16's made my car slower.

I have the original 14' Fuchs (at the moment on my '70 911).
You are welcome to try them out. The tires are barely used.

Faulkens huh...hmmm, gotta check them out. I was bugeting about $125 per tire including mounting.

Nah, I was here in the mess. I've been out here since last August aside for a few weeks here and there. But, don't tell me you were driving that 912E in January and February. What a mess.

The Falkens are sweet. The grip is the closest to competition tires I've ever felt in a street tire. They are just a little bit less grippy than cold Victoracers.

Well I got caught in the downpour on more than one occassion.
In fact, one afternoon the water at an intersection was almost at the bottom of the door. Usually, I just liked driving late at night after the rain stopped...the potenzas are a decent rain tire...need I say more...

Guess what came to my house yesterday cold?????

Ducky and pop out rear windows....the seats and panels are coming in on Tuesday so a trip is in order very soon, I need to get these parts out of my living room.....

Dave so 15's are better for the "E"? Always wanted 16's but after your thoughts I will have to rethink that....

I wonder what wheels I will get ...I hope I dont get the cookie cutters

on a white E. I want to check it out as I have never seen a white one...

Fenderguy, do us a favor and take lots of pics when you do the pop out window conversion. That's on my list too, and I've got the windows sitting on a shelf. I want to see the bosses that are hidden on the B pillar and whether you've got to chase the threads in them to mount your windows, etc.

On the pop outs, ask Rich, he did the conversion on my car. He had to remove somthing...I dont recall.

The pop outs were one of the best upgrades to the car.
Its cooler in the summer and helps the heater and defroster in the winter (draft). The only time I close them is when I wash the car...

Well, I'll put the loose windows in my car before I drop it off!

you wont regret the upgrade. Since I did it, I have never bothered to turn on the air...no leaks, but I did also buy new rubber seals

Cold pretty much said was I was going to say, he recommened the pop out rear windows and I bought them. Here in Arizona I need all the help since its 112 lately its not fun in my current car ..Good thing I dont have the "E" yet I would feel bad for it in this heat

Short List of the most valuable upgrades for me/my car:

1. External oil cooler w/electric fan thermostatically controlled
2. 2-7.5 pull type fans on the deck lid (I run these constantly.
3. The pop out windows (nice air flow in the cab)
4. Windage tray modification
5. Accusump

Those are all things I need to do as well.
