What's the story on Mann & Hummel "cans"
I'm looking for photographs of original '65/'66 built 912 engine compartments. I found these photos on eBay showing the rare Mann & Hummel air cleaner canisters and 911 style engine mount bar on a couple '66 model year 912s for sale there.
![]() ![]() Does anybody know the timeframe and number of cars these pieces where used? Anybody have a photo of a restored engine compartment with these pieces installed they could post? Thanks! |

This was the stock setup for '66 912's (at least for most 66's). In '67 the engine mount was changed across the board to the U cross-sectioned bar with rubber blocks, and the air cleaners were changed as well.

I had read on a Swedish 912 enthusiast's site that these were only used on European destined 912s, or at least those with European style heating and US models having the regular Knecht oiled-wire screen type filters. Any truth to this?

Darryl I have these on my merican sourced 66. I love them, though the filters are hard to find down here, they give a throatier sound IMHO.

Check this out! Today I received a very tattered and stained copy of a "III/65" edition of an original 912 owner's manual I won on eBay. In it I found this wonderful picture:
![]() The interesting thing is the photo shows the European heating system ducting and it is a U.S. market English language manual. I would love to presume that the factory didn't feel a photo with the other heating system was warranted. Hummmm.... |
