gen is 1 inch longer than the old gen - crank pulley needs to extend or add another pulley - maybe two belt instead of one

You need to double check exactly what parts you used for this conversion. The two generators use different mounting parts all of which "fit", but can result in the wrong clearances.
Some of the parts that are different are: Rear mounting nut (towards front of car); Carrier plate; Fan; cover plate and fan hub. I did a similar conversion a few years ago and laid out all of the parts from both cars, hoping to choose those in the best condition, when I realized just how different (even slightly) the setups are. I tried to use the old carrier plate by drilling new holes for the new larger generator and although it fit fine where it entered the fan housing and on the shorter generator stand, the generator pulley does not line up with the crank pulley. Right now 2020 in Phoenix and German Auto Dismantling are looking for a carrier plate that it to the larger generator in the 1969. Anybody have one call me at 307-299-7819 -- Miles

As you can see the small and the large generators are not the same length and the length is compensated for by the concave / convex mounting plate. This is your alignment problem, but as WFBowen mentioned there are parts in the fan assembly that are not direct change outs.
The best way to do the conversion is to find a complete large generator assemble with the fan and the large diameter generator stand. Rest assured you are not the first to get caught up in the differences of the conversion. I know several folks who have spent a considerable amount of time chasing down all the correct conversion parts. ![]()
