Mahle piston cast or forged PIC
My dad is replacing the pistons and cylinders on his 68 912. He has sent me a picture of the Mahle Pistons and cylinder set. Cylinders are Nikasil and he says the pistons are forged but they look like cast to me. Any insight here? What do you guys think? Thanks for the help. Also- I am trying to convince him to put the alloy oil cooler inplace. What temp. drop can he expect by using this piece. Can I get one directly from the source to avoid the extra 100$ bucks tacked on by performance? Much appreciated.

Buff-
If they're real Mahles then don't worry - they're good! The aluminum oil cooler is a good addition from what I hear - worth doing if the engine is already out and so much other work is being done. A shame to ruin lots of expensive new parts if it overheats. However, with all else in good shape, I took my 68 up to Maine over the weekend with temps in the 90's and even sitting in a 5 mile traffic jam the temp never got over 1/2 way with a stock oil cooler. So not necessary, but cooler is always better if you want to get a lot of miles out of the engine. Jason
