'66 912 Shift Coupler Problems?
First off, I will get pictures as soon as possible tomorrow, but for now, this short explanation of the problem will have to do.
I am the recent owner of a 1966 912, and when I pulled the interior (everything) I noticed that the shift linkage cover was missing - surprise surprise I know - and that the shift coupler was jamming against the top of the tubular housing that recedes under the rear seats. The bolt on the top of the coupler has created a dent in that housing, and the entire center "console"/transaxle tunnel housing near the linkage cover is bent upwards, due to the shift rod being too far vertical. Has anyone encountered this before? The car currently has the engine pulled, would that have anything to do with this weird situation? Best, DG |

DG-
If the transmission is still in and not properly supported it's probably hanging down, and because of where the remaining mount is it would kick up the end in the tunnel there, causing the situation you're describing, I think. IF that's the case, look in the engine bay and run a rope or strap from one shock bold (extending up into the engine bay), under the transmission and back up to the other shock. That's how I've usually seen them left when the engine is pulled with the transmission in place. Hope that helps... Jason

Jason,
That diagnosis was exactly correct. I jacked up the transmission while in the car and then set a jackstand underneath it, and the coupler went back "into" the housing. Good fix 'Doc. Thanks and best, Dustin |
