Hello Everyone,
My name is Paul. I'm do not own a 912 YET....but I sure to in the future. I also attend 912 Registry gatherings in Seal Beach Ca, Pasadena Ca...and of course the German Auto Fest. Here is a pic of my cars. ![]() I am writing on behalf of my grammer school track coach Frank, who I've kept in touch with. Here is a pic of him, his son Frank Jr. and Frank Sr. original owner 67 912. ![]() This past Christmas, I helped his daughter buy him an aftermarket 5spd shifter knob and crushed sleeve from Performance Products. He has since told me that it does not seem to fit properly, loose. The original knob is threaded (female) as is the shifter rod (male). According to Frank, the aftermarket knob is not threaded and the crushed sleeve I guess is to be press fit into the female opening of the shift knob. BTW, the crushed sleeve is perforated soft aluminum. After this is press fit in the knob, I assume the knob and sleeve is then "force" tapped onto the steel shifter rod. Since the orig shifter rod I assume to be steel....I am not worried about damage. Any suggestions on how to make this fit properly? Anyone willing to sell an original/factory 5spd knob for a 67 912? Worst case...I assume a time-insert can be installed in the knob...kinda like we do with heads and cases. I really appreciate you help. Paul

Nice car.. and history.. Well I changed mine but it was a 69 car I made the tool from the book and used it to removed the shifter knob all was easy and well.
BUT I know where your coming from as I also have a 65 car and that is threaded.. and I have a wood knob on that car. I would say that there seams to be a different type of shift for these year of cars.. so I would check out the parts listings on the Porsche.com web site and see what it different also check out www.bbs912.com and ask on there

912UK,
I really appreciate your response and support information. We are returning the aftermarket item and are not on the hunt for a factory knob. Regards, Paul

5sp knob for 67
There was no such animal.
The 5 sp knob didn't start until 68 on the 912. The SWB cars through 67 had the screw on Ball type without any markings for the racing shift pattern. The very early ones had knobs similar to the 356. There were some after market 5 sp marked ones screw on type. However, none from the factory. If the crushed sleeve one had the right shift pattern. Then you should be able to use the stick from a 68. It will take the crush sleeve type. Or you could use a couple of sleeves one over the other to make the knob tight on the stick. 69 on used a different shift pattern and stick. |

Jaems,
I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with a detailed explanation. In addition, you added a couple of options I did not think of. Again Thanks... I'll let Frank know.... Paul
