912 Ignition Timing

I have a 67 912 with the 022 distributor. From reading other posts, I understand that the 912 needs about 32 degrees of advance at 3000 rpm. Is there a mark on the pulley at the 32-33 degree point or do I need to calculate how far that would be from TDC? Thanks for your help.

Tom

You might consider investing in a digital timing light with rpm read outs, or perhaps someone rents them..... There are no marks at 32 degrees on any of my cars, pulleys are available with degree readouts but the digital light makes it very easy, they retail for about $100.00.

From TDC, measure to the right, clock wise, 1.5". It doesn't really matter if it is a cord or tangent, it will be close enough to 30 degrees. A toothpick width beyond will get you in to the 32 degree range. Dyno results have indicated that +/- a degree or so can effect HP. A digital advance timing light is a good investment as mentioned.

Thanks for the help. I measured about 1.5 inches and set the timing. The car runs much better. I still have some issues with getting the split shaft carbs to idle smoothly.

Are you sure that the little block that sits where the adjusting screw is for balancing the front and rear butterflies is in place? If not one can be fabricated from anything like rubber fuel hose.

A bunch of info on this over at 912bbs.org.
