69 912 Timing...again

Hi,
I am a frequent reader, but a new 912 owner... 69 912. 95% excellent condition, needs a little carb and ignition work. The carb work is for a later posting.

I'm sure this has been covered before although I have the read the forum for a while. I am a little confused on 912 ignition timing. I have read and heard different settings. I think this is how the timing should be set: 3 degrees ATDC @ 900 rpm, and 30 degrees BTDC @ 3000 rpm.

I have an 061 distributer (dizzy)
Are these settings correct?
Are both settings done with spark advance(retard) disconnected?
Car runs a little rough - probably carbs, but when I adjusted timing, I started getting backfiring thru #3 or 4. I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks, MikeC

Read the Whole section on 68 timing. It will also cover the 061, and yes the retard has to be disconnected when setting the timing.

If you have the original Solex carbs, they can be narly to properly adjust, but when adjusted are the best carbs. I converted to webers, which have their own issues, but seem to be doing fine. There was noticeable popping with the Solexes even when the valve lash, timing, and carbs were professionally adjusted. Unsteady running is a multifactorial issue, and there is rarely one factor that causes it. You have to constantly juggle all the factors and hope you can stay on center.
