beetle engine into porsche- 912 flywheel?

hi guys, i bought a project beetle, with a 901 gearbox in it and have a beetle engine that im trying to fit.

the engine and flywheel fits into the bell housing ok, but the starter wont contact it.

the engine came out of a bay and has the large 280mm flywheel.

ive been told to use porsche starter.

ive also been told to use 912 flywheel.

but i went to look at a 912 a mate of mine has. it has beetle engine. but the flywheel is the same width (280) and depth (37 mm away from engine case to edge of flywheel tooth nearest gearbox)

can you guys tell me something- is the 912 flywheel the same as the type 2(bay) 280 mm flywheel.

is there anyone out there that could help me with this?
ops:

I've done a couple 912 to VW conversions in Porsches. Here's what works with a VW motor (TYPE 1) mating to a 901 gearbox:
  • Flywheel: Use a 12v 200mm flywheel which is the stock unit for later Beetles and Bus (to 1971) These are 130 tooth flywheels VW part no. 311-105-273.
  • Clutch/PPlate: You can use any Type 1 stock or performance clutch setup (200mm) just make sure it's the version with individual pressure plate fingers, and not the one with a round collar that engages the release bearing.
  • The throw-out bearing remains the Porsche one.
  • You can successfully retain the Porsche starter motor even though it doesn't fully engage the flywheel teeth.
