Need help: I have destroyed several brake caliper seals in my '69 rear caliper. It seems that when I reinsert the caliper piston it makes a lot of resistance. I use a large C clamp to pressure them in and when pressed in, the seal is cut by the piston. I have tried a lot of lubricants but I fail! I have broken 3 sets already. What am I doing wrong?

I am new to this too but a couple of observations from my current experiences rebuilding the brakes on my 67.
The old seals can leave residue in the grooves in the caliper. This will prevent the new seals from seating properly and they will stick out too far. Also, any nicks or marks in the piston will catch on the seal. If the bottom of the piston is smooth and the caliper seal is all the way in, try clamping onto the top edge of the piston with a vise grip as you insert it and wiggle and twist on it until it is passed the seal. Then use the clamp to seat the piston over the center guide spring. Please note: When clamping on to the piston, grab it above the area where it inserts into the caliper so you don't score the sides of the piston. |
