1/4 windows whistle at speed
hello,
i have a question about wind noise at speed (i mean > ~60 mph) on a '67 912. i get a constant whistle which seems to come from both the driver's and passenger small front windows (are they called 1/4 windows?). if i crack the driver's 1/4 window about an inch the whistle is still there. any further open and it goes away. or if a open the driver's main window about 3" it still whistles. if i keep going to about 4-5" the whistle also goes away. i have only had the car about 4 weeks and the window seals look decent to my neophite eyes except for about 2" of window seal missing from the front of the main driver side window. does anybody have any suggestions? is it just a matter of replacing the driver's main window seal? tim ![]() |

Its the seals. I had the same problem with my 912. If the seals deteriorate, the window doesn't seal properly. You can see this by pulling the window closed when driving down the road, the whistling should stop. Replacing the seal is the only cure I know of and I think that replacing the seal is quite a job, so I was told. The wonders of older Porsches. Now ride in a Targa and you have a whole new meaning of wind noise!

the seals being the problem makes sense to me.
actually, the whistling is still there when all windows are shut tight (above 60 mph). opening at least one window is the only way i have discovered to stop the noise. if it matters, i keep the front defroster set to heat, not fresh air. ![]() tim ![]() |

i have replaced my 1/4 vent window seals and they will still whistle a bit on the freeway. i have to crack one about an inch to stop it. replacing them is not too difficult. you can do it without removing the frame but you will need to access the post through the doorpanel. you may try bending the receiver part that the lever grabs when closed. bend it towards the inside of the car. i know it sounds barbaric but it helped my car. now replacing the window channel seals is a pain. just did that project last month. good luck.

Hi all,
My 67 was exactly the same. For a quick fix (last week) I used some (approx 5mm) sticky foam padding. I bought it at a DIY shop, I think it is used for doors to keep out the draft!!. It's black and fitted perfectly in the rubber, then I also used a small section around the quarter window along the front. It's only a quick fix and I do aim to replace the rubber in the summer, but it did work. No more opening the windows at 50mph. HTH Alan 67 912 69 912 ![]() |

Hi, my 66 does the same thing. I just got back from a longish trip and what I though was whistling (the vent window) turned out to be door gasket. funny thing, when I open the vent window an inch or so, it stops.
