Porsche 912 with 2.7 motor help
I have a 1967 912. Trying to put a 1974 2.7 motor in it. What do I need to do to make this work?

well
i have looked at doing this and you will need to do quite a bit of metal fabrication to make this work. you need to weld in the 911 motor mount as well as weld in the proper inner quarter to hang the oil tank on.you will need the fuse panel in the rear as well as fuel pump relays gauges at least the tach as well as torsion bars to hold the extra weight. these are just a few items i can think of. the tranny would be better 911 gearing as well. cheers ed

I have done it on two different occassions and dependent on you fabricating skills it's not hard at all. The stock 912 mounts must be removed and the impressions that are in the rear corners of the engine compartment must be opened up to receive the 911 mounts. If you look you can make out where the mounts go. The same goes for the oil tank ( you should try and stick with a tank from a 66 to 68 it's a little easier. If you choose choose to go with a complete aftermarket ignition and electronic fuel injection such as Mega-squirt or Accel than you can eliminate the potential wiring headaches. I have some picture somewhere of the cuts and holes that are performed prior to introducing the engine to the car. If you have a 5 speed you might prefer the gearing of the 912 trans around town and it isn't that bad on the highway. For a better opinion see if you can get in touch with Matt at GT Trans he's usually in the 914 forum.

You might want to check out the 912 Renegades portion of the 912 BBS as well

You should be talking to the Group R folks. They are the ones putting 911 engines in 912's. However, they usually install 2.0 and 2.2 engines.
I am not sure. But I think the 901 transaxle will not bolt up to a 2.7. or be strong enough. They used a 915 instead. The gearing will be too short for the 2.7. You may have some problems if you decide to try the 915 transaxle. Being that you are then putting a long wheel base engine and transaxle into a short wheel base car. The rear suspension was moved back about 2 inches on the long wheel base car. Also you are going to have a over steer problem with all of that extra weight in the rear. That is why the factory went to the longer wheel base cars. The 2.7 has a problem with the head studs coming loose. Unless they have already been upgraded along with the pop-up valve in the air box, the adjustable chain tentioners, turbo valve covers, and depending on the year of the 2.7 engine (the 74 was the best year) you will have to replace the fan to an 11 blade one. The best 911 engine for these cars was the 2.2 Again try the R Group folks. They are the ones that turn 912's into 911's. They will know of all the things that have to be done. Thanks for all the info. I have got the motor mounts figured out, oil tank, and fuel pump. I want to know how to bolt the 901 to the 2.7 (if possible, I've got both answers) Do I use a 200mm disc with the 2.7 pressure plate? Do I need to use a different clutch arm? I was told it would bolt right up; now that I have the engine I see that it may be more difficult.

The 2.7 will bolt up to the 901 trans and work properly. The 901 can safely handle 275lb torque before it gets into trouble. You can beef it up buy using an aluminum intermediate plate. All of your flywheel PP and clutch issues can be handled by the folks at Kennedy Engineered Products Kennedy Engineered Products They have the answers and product off the shelf to get you rolling. You will be surprised at how easy this project will go together.

I have a 68 912, which currently has a 902/02 transmission installed. Would I have to change the trans. mounts in my 912, or just the rear mounts in order to install a 2.0 into my 912?

You will have to change the rear mounts only and mount an oil tank with all the hardware associated . You can use the 902 trans just don't hammer on it to much.
I notice that you have a 450SL, I just bought a 79 this weekend and I am going to attempt to sort it out over the week how do you like yours?
