Rare gauges?
I have a 66 912, and It has a green Speedo in KM, I need one in MPH. The car also has an ambient Temp gauge that of all things, works! How rare are these?
Thanks |

The ambient temp gauge was optional, and correspondingly very very rare. There were two types, one in the five-dash cluster, and a second type installed in the brushed metal left of the ignition switch that would work with the three-gauge cluster as well.
You might want to contact two of the longtime VDO service shops, Palo Alto Speedometer www.paseedo.com and North Hollywood Speedometer www.nhspeedometer.com if you're interested in refurbishing or refacing your gauges.

There is no reason to change the Km to Miles. It just means that you have a Euro car. The ratio is 5 to 8 meaning for every 5 miles, you have gone 8 Km, so 55 MPH is 88 Kph. I have always driven my 66 with the Kph.
The ambient temp gauge, as Rick has said, is rare, especially one that works. Most of them have the end broken off and those can not be repaired. |

I'll most likely keep the speedo in KM's. As for the temp gauge, it works, and its a 5 gauge dash car, so I may send them off to get re-furbed.

I sold my temp. gauge a few years ago for way too cheap. I wish I could have it back.

![]() Are you sure its a 66? The kilometer speedo implies it is a European model and was imported privately rather than being sold originally by a US dealer. My 65 was registered as a 66, as were many other 65s. If you haven't already, find your chassis number on the plate and on the trunk floor near the gas tank and register it with the 912 registry: 912 Registry - Owner Registration Form There is some fuzziness as to the cutoff point in chassis numbers between 65s and 66s. (see previous threads here on this) The cars were almost identical and the factory was not making the distinction clear. If you post your chassis number on this Pelican board the 912 experts will help you figure out what you have. Does it have the European fresh air heater required by the German government for cars sold originally in Germany? This type of heater is harder to assemble and maintain but works better. Above is a picture of a 65 motor with what appears to be a European heater, which includes an air tube facing the rear coming off the shroud to the right of the generator. The flex tube is missing in this picture.

I did the vin # thing. (457512) It says it's a 66, the title (Its in the mail) is a 67. Has the KM speedo, an Ambient temp gauge. The 1600cc is long gone, and it has a 2.0 from ether a "E" or a 914?? (even VW bus ??) It was a "Barn" find somewhat. 1/2 restored, then it sat. (last on the road was 2000) Lots of new, and restored parts. But like everything, there is always a need for more.

Hi
Try checking on EBay, every day there are at least 3,400 listings for all sorts of 912 parts. I found 90% of all the bits I needed. A lot of parts are listed by guys clearing out their garages, completing projects or parting out cars. ![]()
