Any 912E's converted to 6?

Has any one done this? Is it the same as having to convert an older 912? With the motor mounts?

There was an article in PCA Panorama about 74-77 911's which was written by a guy who'd converted his 912E to 911S spec with a 2.7 6-cylinder. Don't remember if he fitted a 915 type trans. He seemed very pleased with the conversion. The 74-77 911's were being touted as a good 'entry-level' Porsche, having overcome many of the head-stud and overheating issues in the intervening 30+ years. The Pano featured a cover photo of several different colored 911S types if you're looking for it. About a year ago, or so. R/Dave L.

Other than the motor mounts the other issue you will encounter is the output shaft on the gearbox. It's designed to be used with the VW based engine and clutch kit found in the 912E.

I will confess to being a bit of a purist as a former 912E owner. I would take a good running stock 912E over a 74-77 911 any day of the week. I personally wouldn't convert this car if you've got a decent type IV core to start with. For the cost of the swap (and with less effort) you can build a type IV that will let that car run with pretty much anything up to a 911sc. 125bhp is really easy on that engine. 150bhp costs a bit more but is still not out of the realm of reliable. Having those in a lighter configuration and your car will handle better and turn laps faster than any 74-77 911 and equal to SCs.

hi all,

I have repowered my 912E with a 3.0 SC engine.

I bought the car three years ago and set about striping it back to bare metal and rebuilding piece by piece.

Became a real labour of love, and heart won over head on many occasions. Including a respray in Viper Green.

The Type IV was in terrible shape and i decided that rather than spend a fair amount of cash and then only have 90hp that I would slot in a 3.0 with 180bhp.

Ground off the engine mounts, bit of rewiring for the additional gauges, and fitted a front mounted cooler using all the original fixing points actually on the car.

it was easy - seriously.

still uses the original gear box which is perfect, and the clutch plate was uprated using a 2.2 clutch as the output shaft is smaller. Never had any issues and you can dump the clutch and spin the wheels no problem - dont do that often though.

I love the narrow body, and wouldnt have it any other way.

Love my car and the way it drives now - its perfect in my eyes!

Porsche's and green. There's a long history there. Just when Silver, Black or Red seem to be the top Porsche color, any number of greens jump in that look spectacular! This one included. zioo
