912 stereo options
Ok, how are your speakers configurated in your 912? I'm going to have new door panels and am debating if I should cut them up, or put the speakers some where else. The only problem is where else? So, let me know how you have them configurated, and if you have them in the doors, how did you mount them.
Thanks |

Speakers
Josh I have two 100 watt pioneer truck speakers that are self contained on my back shelf. They sound great. I have them mounted on a piece of black plastic using their mounting brackets and I cut the plastic to fit the back shelf and put cut outs in the plastic to fit over the tie downs that are on the shelf. Using a velcro strap I secure the plastic and the speakers to the brackets. No speakers flying around the car. Also dont forget to put some type of foam under the plastic to deaden the vibration.

I put a speaker shelf from a newer 911 (83 I think) in my 912. Since it's for a 911 it looks good and fits very nicely on the rear shelf. The best part is that it doesn't require you to modify your car. You just sit it on top and run it under the upholstery and if you every want to remove it it's no big deal.

I have a 5.25 inch speaker in each door (the holes were already cut when we got the car). As for the rear, I don't use the rear seats, so I put a pair of 6x9 speakers in their own boxes in those seats. Not a high-end system, but I don't want everyone else on the road to hear my system either.

I was going to put 6 1/2 in the doors. When I finished my door panels I didn't have the heart to cut them up. You might find the same when you have the new door panels. Also thought that the window crank might get in the way. Ended up with just the one center speaker. 6x4 Also, That Dynamat ( I used generic brand) stuff works great. The door closes with a thud. I'm just going to buy one of the underdash covers from Automotion with the speaker cut outs in it.
I don't want to cut up my door panels and I don't want speaker boxes in the back because it look tacky plus if I ever where to wreck one of those things could take my head off unless it was bolted down. Two high quality speakers up front are plenty for the 912 IMHO. I don't listen to the radio much anyways unless I am bored at a car show. My Blaupunkt Nashville is only 25x2 anyways so I'll keep it simple and probably get a cheap set of component speakers. There is a guy on eBay always selling 5 1/4" McIntosh Component sets for around $100 those would sound excellent.

Josh: I went through the rear speaker dilema and finally got lucky. Radio Shack (of all places!) sells very small rectangular, self-contained, weatherproof 3-ways which just fit in the small opening of the rear seats, between the cushion and the back, when folded down. The great thing about this is that the fit is so close, the weight of the seat-top holds the speaker in place and no attachments, etc. are needed & the wiring runs up the middle under the carpets. With good front speakers, they're great for 4-speaker "fill" sound.

mp3,s in the 912e
We have the stock or old Blaupunkt in our 912e the sound is adequate. What I have done is bought a portable discman that plays mp3 cd's and a FM transmitter it all fits in the glove box and I get 700 - 800 minutes of music on a cd.

What a dilema. I'm thinking about the underdash speakers and possibly rear deck speakers, like the later 911s, not speaker boxes. I'll use the rear seats all the time, for luggage and passengers (it is possible) and so speakers in the rear seats probably will not work. My old 912 had door speakers, but with the new panels and new door pockets, I really don't want to cut up a $300 investment. As for the underdash cover, I remember seeing it in Performance Products, but don't have a catalog on me right now. How much do they cost, and do they work? Also, if you purchase a new dash you have two options, 1 with speaker holes, and one without. Did Porsche have dash speakers like on the early 944/924?

After much thought, and suggestions from far and wide, I'm thinking about going with 2 speakers under the dash. Do any of you have this setup, how did you set it up, and what materials did you use? The underdash plastic panel is no longer available from Performance Products. Pictures are always nice!

Josh I spoke with Art at Performance earlier today and he told me that they are still making them but they are back ordered and ETA is 7-8 Days right now.
The part number is: 9406 for the one without the speakers (w/ 5.25" Speaker cutouts.) Art said he had sold a lot of them this year and they are popular item. I suggest getting that underdash setup and buy a pair of these to go in it: That guy almost always has sets of those speakers for sale I would just e-mail him. You will be impressed with this simple setup I guarantee you. Even with power off of the head unit only they will sound excellent. Add a small amp and enter another level

I haven't installed it yet but I have a system in mind. I put in the original Blaupunkt but haven't gotten it to work so I'm considering taking it apart but leaving the faceplate. I'll make some sort of motorized structure so I can put a new deck hidden behind the Blaupunkt which can be lowered to just below the dash. I'll put a couple 5" speakers in kick panels replacing that wierd carpet fold just in front of the doors. One thing to remember is that high frequencies get cut out easily so if you can, point the speakers at your ears.
I have a four inch hole on the passenger side into the trunk which was for the old motor for the air conditioning unit. I'm going to enlarge it a little bit and build a box for a 6.5" subwoofer which will be in the trunk but fire through the hole into the cabin. Low frequencies are very non-directional so it's fine if the speaker points at the floor. When I actually start and finish this project I'll post some pictures (well, only if it turns out good!) Josh, nice to see that not all 912 problems are oily and mechanical. I too have been trying to figure out how to install extra speakers in my 912 without cutting panels etc. Ever since September 11th, when I drove 250 miles with my head at right angles to the dashboard trying to listen to those awful events through my rather faint, stock Blaupunkt.
Shortly afterwards I received a nice letter and some magazines from the previous owner in CA.(I'm in the UK by the way) One of the mags carried an advert for http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/sub.htm neat idea don't you think? I have also made an enclosure for the rear parcel shelf. MDF, covered in black carpet, just lies on top, snug fit, won't fly out when I brake. (Isn't carpet just great for covering the odd sawing mistake). Happy New Year and best of luck with the new car. |
