				Oil Leak

Hello, I've been having a problem with an oil leak on my 67 912. It started out as a rather bad leak from the Oil temp/pressure sending unit. I switched out the hollow screw and washers, and it seems to have slowed the leak down, but it's still a pretty significant leak. You can press down on the throttle pushrods and watch the oil start flowing from where the temp/pressure unit meets the engine. According to the engine diagrams the unit is only supposed to be sealed by the 6 washers, is there any better way to seal the unit and stop the leak? If anyone has had any experience with this and could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Andrew Stallworth | ||

Hi Andrew, I had a small oil leak, and I thought that it was coming from the exact area that you describe.....then it turned into a HUGE oil leak and I could tell where it was really coming from....under the fan housing. The oil cooler had come loose. The oil cooler is inside the fan housing, behind the sending unit. Check to see if it is wet between the sending unit and fan housing. If your oil cooler is loose or cracked (not likely), the leak will get worse. Don't take any long trips.

Thanks for the advice, the leak actually turned out to just be the temperature/pressure sending unit. I've heard that those tend to leak some oil. I just had a problem with old metal. I ordered some new parts for it (356 parts, 912 parts don't exist for this piece) Then made some new seals with aluminum washers instead of the copper? ones that should be on there. It hasn't leaked more than a drop or two since then, and I can live with that small of an oil leak. If I see it happening again, I'll look at the oil cooler.

I'm glad that it was an easy fix.
