I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I am getting my 1976 912E back on the road after sitting for a time. I am noticing that it will blow white smoke once it is warmed up. This only seems to happen when I am going down hills. Anybody know what would cause it to smoke only under these circumstances? It is fine around town at all speeds until I hit a hill.

So you are engine braking when going downhill? If you accelerate, does the smoke stop? If so, that sounds like worn valve guides.

Worn valve guides is the most obvious answer, that said excessive oil in the crankcase can also cause white smoke. Since you're noticing this in out of level situations I would look into that first. Try running a little under the full line and see what happens.
One of the worse things for a vehicle is being idle, seals dry out, gaskets fail, all kinds of bad stuff. Best of luck, Chas. 356912911 |
