New member 66 912 needs to replace clutch?
I need to replace throwout bearing...and maybe clutch. I could hear the bearing at first but no slippage on clutch then one day after sitting a few weeks when i depressed the clutch the pedal stayed on floor. You can pull it out by hand and the cable still seems ok. But not sure. Is there a good manual with photos that can help me do this job? Any help would be appreciated.

From your description, I would first make very sure that the problem is not in the cable connection. Raise the car a little (safely) and, under the car, watch the release lever at the LH side of the clutch housing - the lever the clutch cable attaches to - while an assistant moves the clutch pedal through its full travel. Does the release lever move as the pedal is moved?
If no, problem is between pedal and release lever. If yes, try moving the release lever by hand. In the forward direction, there should be only a small distance that you can move it before you feel strong resistance. This is the resistance of the diaphragm springs in the clutch. If you can move it by hand the same distance that the clutch pedal moves it in its full travel then there is a problem with the release lever/release bearing assembly. Originally, 66 models had a small return spring on the release lever, to ensure that the thrust bearing came clear of the diaphragm spring when the pedal was released. Later models had this spring in the pedal assembly. If your car has the external return spring on the release lever, disconnect it before the hand test. |

Ditto on the above recommendations.
If you do end up replacing the clutch, you really should have some kind of manual. Easiest to get is probably the "Porsche 912 Handbook" (AKA "orange book") Published by Lash International. This is an abstraction of the factory shop manuals, so there is no author listed. |

Well you were right ..it wasn't the clutch but rather the pedal cluster.I did pull my engine out anyways to check the clutch disc. It was ok but starting to get down there so I ordered a new one...pressure plate and throwout bearing looked good. The pedal cluster was in bad shape ( missing springs. bushings...rusty etc. ) so i just ordered a rebuilt one from a contact through Pelican. 150 plus 15 shipping ...reasonable.Now to see what I can do about 2nd gear grinding....low speeds ok otherwise forget about it. Hoping it is not a synchro but not sure....Thx for the help

You need to rebuild your pedal cluster, it's not hard, and a great learning project. And a heck of a lot cheaper.
