68 Factory Correct Battery
Another vendor told me the battery was held in by two straps. The rusty sheet metal I took out had a rectangular frame to hold the base of the battery, along with the remnants of a single strap. Anybody have a photo or two of the original arrangement?

'65-'68 batteries were held in by one rubber strap. the battery sits on the fuel tank/battery box support, which has a metal tab with hole for the strap, and a metal flange to surround the battery. If rotted out, replacements supports are still available. Above the battery box support goes a plastic battery tray to limit overspills. A plastic cover with contours for the posts / compression terminals / conductors further isolates the battery. the rubber strap installs over the battery cover and hooks to the metal tab previously mentioned.

Thanks that makes sense with what little was left when I cut out the bad stuff. The metal flange looks like a pretty simple fabrication item. I don't see it listed by our host or by the vendor located in Ohio. Ditto the tray, though the vendor in Ohio does list the strap and the cover.

Yes! That's exactly what I needed. And I hope my trunk looks like that, too.
