Ok once again my ignorance is showing.
I see all of this argument on types of distributors, which is best so on and so forth. So how do i know which one is in my '69? Thanks, Nate |

There is a number stamped on the body of the distributor.
The last 3 numbers should tell you (050 or 009 etc) |

Ok I'm confused I was looking at my distrib and the only numbers I see are on a little black plate that says BOSCH and the last three numbers are "BR8" ? It's right on the front of the unit. Am I looking in the wrong place or somthing?

Sounds like an old K18. Let me get back to you on that.

Josh: I would most appreciate your help. If it is a K18 is it better than an 009 or not any good at all?
I am going to be installing the MSD electronic ignition in the summer and don't want my distributor to be a weak link.

Perhaps you have:
VJ 4 BR 9 Used on 356A 56 & 57 models VJ 4 BR 18 Used on 356 A from 58 models & 356 B all engines If you have the "18" it has the same advance curve as the 022 used through '67. 022 main shaft runs in bushings. 18 main shaft runs in cast iron bore. Hmmmm. i wish i knew the history of my engine
![]() I bought the car from a used car lot all i know is the car came from OHIO. I don't know if it has a big bore kit, cam or anything arghhhhh. I know it has Webers and Bursch exhaust and whomever owned it raced it because of the rollcage and harness bolts still in the floors. The distributor could be BR18 I just wonder why they would put that one on there? The numbers on the engien say it is a 1969 engine. Are there any advantages to the BR18? Are they more rare then 050s or what?

The 18 is an older model dist. for a 356. It has the same advance curve as a 022 or 031. If it isn't worn you should be fine using it.
050 was not designed for our engines but happens to work quite well and is readily available. They are not rare. |

Check the advance curve. It should be about 30 degrees. If it is the BR18 you have a great distibutor. I almost traded the 050 for one, but now I got my sights on an 031.
