shifter woes on a 69 912
Out of stupidity and out of frustration with my wife I exerted too much effort in a shift from neutral to first....It felt kinda funny and afterwards I cannot use second gear and the shift pattern seems to have moved...Fifth gear is now way over to the right and down. First is still far left and down but second is non existant...
Any Idea what I horsed out of place? Thanks, Toby |

Check the bushings that are at the base of the shift lever and the one that supports the shift rod (behind the shift lever in the tunnel.) Then check the shift coupler behind the seats under the 4-screw cover. Make sure this one is clamped tightly to the shiftrod and that its bushings are intact (these bushings have a slight amount of slack designed in.)

Shifter woes
Thanks for the response, I took the grill off the center tunnel behind the front seats, there I found that the coupler had one bushing in place and it had rolled out and was laying on the pan, the other side was long gone. It looked like a u-joint with no end caps just wallowing around. I'll hold off on my panic unitl Pelican sends me the bushing kit I ordered...
Thanks |

I tried replacing the bushings on my 68 and found there was too much slop even after the new bushings. IIRC the press pin required a lot of force to remove. You can still buy new couplers from Porsche at Pelican. The new coupler had much less play and improved my shift feel.

The 914 parts for the rear coupler have circle holes, not oval like a 911/912, so there is less slop.
