Lost 1st and 3rd Gear
New member to the forum... Have visited the site plenty over the years and enjoy the articles. Have not had any issues with my 67 so have not needed to post any questions until today... Out driving today on a beautiful warm day hear in Cincinnati when I lost 1st and 3rd gear. Was able to make it home using 2nd and 4th. Have not had a chance to tear into it yet. Trying to engage 1st or 3rd just won't work. Feels like it is just no longer there. Any suggestions. I have a 4 speed tranny.
Thanks, Don |

Don:
Start by checking your shift lever bushing and the rear shift coupler bushings. Good luck, Bill. |

lost 1st and 3rd
Same thing happend to me, I was downshifting into first gear in a parking lot and out plopped the shifter coupler bushing in the rear ....Only 2nd and 4th worked.
Pelican has the best deal on the shifter bushing kit, I was only going to replace the coupler bushings but decided to check the others in the kit...They were pounded into dust....Non existent..After replacing the bushings it shifts like a new car, not a 40 year old one........Easy repair Toby Maxwell 69 912 Sahara beige 07 Mini Cooper |

good time to change everything
if you open it up, might as well change all the wear parts; with all new parts the shifts will be cleaner. and don't forget to change the inner and outer coupler dust boots if cracked. What is the condition of your motor mounts?

If you decide to go nuts and replace the 1st/reverse lockout plate while your shifter is out to replace the cup and o-ring, wear goggles as the lockout springs are packed with lots of energy. Work somewhere you can find the spring(s) in case they get away from you.
