Back to the hazard lights

While waiting for a kind person to ship me a fuel gauge and sensor, I would appreciate any help on my hazard light issue. They work on the passenger side but not on the driver's side. All the turning signals function properly. It may be a grounding problem but I do not know where to look for the left side ground. I have an enlarged wiring diagram which indicates the brown wire is always the ground wire. I have checked the connectors on the flasher and they seem OK. I have done a search here and at the 912bbs but found nothing addressing this issue. Thanks for your generous help so far on other issues with my beloved 912.
Bill

Bill,

My car is a 69 so I think my wiring is different to your 68. Also, there is a high probability that the original flasher has been changed.

I gather that you have the wiring diagram. Looking at the one that I think (hope) may apply to your car (at least originally) I note that the left and the right sides are fed from separate terminals on the flasher unit and that there are two separate contacts inside the flasher unit, albeit mounted on the same opening/closing arm.

Two obvious possibilities - wire for "missing" side is not making good contact at flasher unit terminal or the closing contact for that side is not making good connection inside the flasher unit.

I also note that the left side terminal on the flasher also takes the wire to the bulb in the flasher switch on the dash. Does this warning light in the switch work? Also, do both (L & R) indicator tell-tales on the dash work or only one? If both work then problem is not at the flasher but in the downstream wiring.

At the flasher unit, terminal for left side has (had) black/white wire for outside lights and blue/yellow for warning light on switch. Terminal for right side had black/green wire. My car is right hand drive hence driver's side/passenger side terminology doesn't work well for me. Left side is your driver's side.

Richard in Austrailia, you have given me many things to check out. I'll let you know how it comes out. Many thanks.

Richard: My wiring diagram is exactly as you described. The flasher is original, marked "Made in Germany SBG 90161534110, 7-66" and has all the original colored wires attached. I cleaned the contacts and re-attached the wires, tried the switch and got no light in the switch. Also, both indicator lights are flashing so the problem must be downstream in the wiring as you said. Where? That is the question. Would you start at the turning signal lights (They all work fine) to check the black/white stripe 49L wire contact and ground?
Bill

Just checked the left side light groups, cleaned all contacts and grounds, no results.
I was thinking would it be work to jump a wire accross from the passenger side to the driver's side and would you have to do both front and back?

Bill, my mistake, fooled by the driver side/left side conversion I have to keep making in my head. The same terminal ex flasher unit powers left side (black/white wire) and warning light in hazard switch (blue/yellow wire). Hence, now seems that problem is ex flasher unit.

Simplest test would be to swap the positions of the black/white and black/green wires ex the flasher unit. Problem should now switch to RH side.

If this happens then quick dirty fix is probably to put a jumper wire between the two terminals involved, at the flasher unit. This will have the downside of putting more current through the opening/closing contact within the flasher (Porsche used two but you will be putting the amps through one) but should suffice in the short term.

If this is not the outcome (problem does not change sides) then will have to move downstream.

OK Richard, thanks and I will try that at first light today.

Adding: Looking at my hazzard light flasher, it has the following connections:1. black/green, 2. black, black, white, 3. green/white, 4. white/red. So I switch the black/green and the black, black/white connections. Correct?

Hazard Light Flasher Connections

The wires on my flasher are as follows:
1. Black/Green Stripe
2. Black, Black/White stripe
3. Green/White stripe
4. White/Red Stripe

As I understand you, I switch 1. and 2. Correct?

It worked! The lights on the driver's (left) are flashing and the right side does not. This means the flasher is the culprit and I need to replace it. So far, I haven't found one.

Call Gary at Parts Obsolete. If he doesn't has one. He should know what the replacement should be.

Some have taken the flasher apart and fix it. However, I would call Gary first.

Glad you got there. Sorry I did not reply in time to confirm your question re the swap. With the time difference your posts were arriving here at 1 and 3 am. Good luck with the hunt.
