Guidance needed: Weltmeister short shifter installation
I'm about to install a short shifter (Weltmeister) in my 912. How difficult is this? A year ago I rebuilt all of the linkages so the car currently shifts quite well. I am just trying to reduce the long throw between gears.
Thanks, Don '68 912 Coupe (burgandy)

overall not that difficult, and i like the way my 66 shifts with it. if you have a heater lever in front of the shifter, you have too cut the base of the weltmeister a bit. a little modding ,nothing serious. the new springs can be a ***** though.

On a 10 scale it's a 3 or 4.....if you're handy.

Mine was too short to reach so I extended it a bit and love it now.

Not so tough
OK. I installed the short shift kit this morning. It is pretty simple but of course I had to have a snafu to extend the total install time (lost one of the four retaining springs and wasted a half hour crawling the garage floor in search of it). The hardest part of the job is getting the two shifter springs back to their original positions (I used a vice grip and lots of profanity). I needed to make no other modifications to the Weltmeister kit and it bolted in easily with the hardware provided. The best part is the outcome: the car shifts very nicely and is tight and precise. Wish I had done this a while ago and heartily recommend it for the 912.
Thanks for the replies! ![]() Don '68 912 Coupe (Burgundy)

If you don't like the hump that the Welt base plate makes, you can achieve the same results by installing a block, the thickness of the base plate (1/2" it does it I think) under the shift rod tube support (where the round ring insert goes that bolts to the rear of the shifter plate). This lowers the shift rod instead of raising the shifter base plate. Make sense?

extending shifter
Similar to cgarr I have noticed that the shifter is somewhat shorter and harder to reach than the stock set up. I am 6'3" and my seat is set all the way back which means I have to reach down a bit to get to the shifter. I have my old shifter and am thinking I can cut a length off of it and weld it on to the short shift to extend the reach a couple of inches.
Make sense?
