Early dipstick

I have a '68 with a non-matching engine case from a '65 car. When I put in the required amount of oil I notice that the oil level on the dipstick is way over the top 'fill line' (by about an inch). Also, when inserted the dipstick will not go all of the way down and there is about an inch between the little cup on the stick and the end of the dipstick receptacle. I ground off enough of the dipstick so it now fits in snugly but wonder about the accuracy of the readings.

I noticed that Stoddard lists dipsticks for '66-73 (not for '65) and wonder if the '65 was somewhat shorter. Anyone know if the '65 case required a different dipstick from other 912s?

The tube that your dipstick goes down, has over the years, been pushed to far down. That is why your reading was over the mark. Mine would sometimes come out when I pulled out the dipstick. I end up tapping it in a little farther to stop this. It now reads a little over the mark. Just put in the correct amount of oil. Notice where it reads on the dipstick. That is your new full mark. As long as it is not hit the crank or rods you will be OK.

This makes sense to me although my sheet metal seems OK. Still I wonder why there was almost a 1" difference which seems like a lot.
