912 Title
Hi.
I am new to the 912 forum. I am thinking of purchasing a 1966 912 from a craigslist ad. I contacted the seller and he said that in 1966 porsche only issued bill of sales and not titles. This sounds a bit suspicious, but I am not sure. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated. Thx. |

i am pretty sure states issue titles and it has nothing to do with the auto manufacturer. some states don't require them if the car is a certain age. check with your dmv on what is required to title it to you. the current owner may need to get a title reissued in order to transfer it to you.

My '66 has been titled in NV, CA, and OR. Some states will accept a bill of sale in lue of a title. Porsche had no part in issuing a state title.

Better make sure that the car has not been stolen, first. If it has a legal registration for that State, in his name, then it is probably alright. All cars, in the US, originally got titles. When they were first sold at dealership and then registered in that State.

I bought mine from Connecticut (I am in NY). There probably was never a title as we are familiar with as the registration served that purpose in those days. Even after I registered the car in NY they still did not issue me a modern title.

Thanks everyone. I also posted this question in the 911 forum and received some great feed back. I made an offer, which the owner accepted. Below is a link to my reply in the 911 forum along with pictures of the car:
